Basically, compounding is customizing, altering, or creating medications to better suit the needs of the patient.
This can be done for medically necessary reasons, such as to change the form of the medication from a solid pill to a liquid or topical cream. We can avoid using a non-essential ingredient that the patient is allergic to or we can customize the medication to obtain the exact dose needed (small doses for infants).
It may also be done for voluntary reasons, such as adding favorite flavors to a medication (especially for kids).
Some doctors offices and clinics have turned away from major drug manufacturers and turned to compounding pharmacies because they often charge much lower prices than the major manufacturers and are able to get a better more customized product for their patients.
We can make:
- Capsules / Powders
- Creams / Ointments / Lotions
- Ear drops
- Solutions / Suspensions / Syrups
- Troches
- Gels
- Herbal and Homeopathic remedies
- Suppositories
- Mouthwashes
- Pain Management
- Hormone Replacement Therapy
- Veteranary Medications
- Dental Medications
And many other compounded medications aren't even available by drug manufactuers. Compounding gives patients many different customized options for their medications.
